Australian hardwoods are a perfect choice for external decking applications, as they are grown in Australia, in Australian conditions. They are dense, tough and durable.
Some hardwood species have a built-in fire retardancy that makes them suitable for bush fire-prone areas, as covered under AS3959. Bushfire retardant timbers include Spotted Gum, Blackbutt, Silver Top Ash and Iron Bark - all are decking options we supply.
We stock and recommend Feast Watson Traditional decking oil, turps wash up. Most hardwood decking timber is chosen for colour, with choice reinforced by durability, knowing that the chosen deck will perform for years to come.
We don’t recommend the use of water-based decking oils on hardwood decks. We find that the film tends to break down after a period of service, which generally requires sanding or stripping for future recoats.
Most hardwood decks are finished off with a clear finish. Generally, decks are not stained. As the natural colour of the timber is enhanced, rather than changed.
The external deck should never be painted, as paint tends to trap moisture in the timber, accelerating the decay of fixings and the timber over the long term.
