Frequently Asked Questions

  • WHAT IS WAXWOOD TREATED TIMBER?

Waxwood is a range of treated timber products protected with unique timber preservatives incorporating copper and azole biocides as active constituents, with a paraffin wax additive that makes it weather resistant. It has been extensively tested in Australia and around the world in both above and in-ground applications against insect and decay attack. It contains no arsenic or chrome like traditional treated pine products.

It is produced using a pressure impregnation process and is available for both pine and hardwood.

  • IS THE TREATMENT SAFE?

Yes, none of the constituents of Waxwood are considered toxic or harmful at the levels present in the timber.

  • HOW DO I KNOW THAT THESE PRESERVATIVES WORK?

We have been treating with Wawood since 2001. The treatment used in Waxwood is ACQ. It has been used in Europe and the United States for over 30 years. And is approved in over 20 countries worldwide. After testing by the CSIRO and the APMVA, ACQ has gained approval under relevant stated legislation, and AS 1604 – Specifications for Preservative Treatment.

  • WHY SHOULD I USE WAXWOOD OVER OTHER TYPES OF TREATED TIMBER?

Unlike other forms of treated timber, Waxwood has no arsenic or chrome. It incorporates only recycled copper and organic azole biocides as active constituents. This is more acceptable when doing work that involves children, animals and food crops. Or where extensive post treatment cutting and machining has to be done to the timber.

  • CAN I USE WAXWOOD AROUND FOOD, VEGETABLE GARDENS AND ANIMALS?

Waxwood is suitable for use in vegetable gardens, stakes, animal fencing, greenhouses and bee hives.

As the timber is treated with a water proofing paraffin wax, water ingress is reduced, thus any chemical loss is minimal.

  • WHAT SORT OF FASTENERS SHOULD I USE?

Like all treated timber, Waxwood contains a salt. So, hot dipped galvanised or stainless steel fixings should be used.

  • CAN I PAINT OR OIL WAXWOOD?

Even though Waxwood has a paraffin wax added during the treatment, it can still be painted like any other timber. It is best left outside or insitu for about three weeks prior to painting for best results.

Waxwood decking can also be oiled or stained to desired colours. We find the best results come from using Feast Watson Natural decking oil.

  • DO I NEED TO RESEAL END CUTS AND REBATES?

Yes, all end cuts should be resealed with products like Ecoseal or CN Emulsion. Cut ends even when resealed should not have direct contact with the ground.

  • HOW CAN I DISPOSE OF WAXWOOD?

Waxwood can be disposed of through normal waste collection and disposal services.
