No arsenic or chrome like traditional treated timber, Waxwood can be used for both domestic and civil applications.
It has been extensively tested in Australia and around the world in both above and in-ground applications against insect and decay attacks.
Termites and timber decay present a significant hazard to the built environment in many parts of Australia. The best form of asset protection is to use both external barrier protection and inherently termite-resistant construction materials.
Particularly for outdoor applications, preservative-treated timber and wood products are useful, durable and versatile building materials.
Preservative treatment of timber prolongs the life of the timber. This reduces the amount of timber we require for construction, and also allows us to use normally non-durable timber species like pine for exterior applications.
Sawmill Trading Company has been producing Waxwood for more than 15 years. Our clients have used our Waxwood for a wide variety of outdoor construction projects, from timber decks to bridge supports.
—FAQs—
Waxwood is a range of treated timber products protected with unique timber preservatives incorporating copper and azole biocides as active constituents, with a paraffin wax additive that makes it weather resistant. This reduces the effects of weathering when used in outdoor applications as water cannot easily enter and leave the timber. This reduces expansion and contraction which causes splitting and cracking in timber.
It has been extensively tested in Australia and around the world in both above and in-ground applications against insect and decay attack. So termites won’t eat it, or rot won’t affect it.
It contains no arsenic or chrome like traditional treated pine products.
Waxwood timber is a treatment that can be applied to either hardwood or pine, and can be treated to Hazard Level 3, for above ground application; or to hazard Level 4, for in ground applications. It is produced using a pressure impregnation process and is available for both pine and hardwood.
The termite-treated timber has been developed to provide an alternative to traditional arsenic and chrome-based timber preservation products.
Yes, none of the constituents of Waxwood are considered toxic or harmful at the levels present in the timber.
We have been producing Waxwood for over fifteen years at Sawmill Trading Company. It is used in all aspects of outdoor construction, from timber decks and vegetable patches in residential backyards, to bridge and jetty supports in large civil projects.
It is safe to use for children’s play equipment, outdoor furniture manufacturing, domestic decks and pergolas, animal penning and public domain works.
We have been treating with Wawood since 2001. The treatment used in Waxwood is ACQ. It has been used in Europe and the United States for over 30 years. And is approved in over 20 countries worldwide. After testing by the CSIRO and the APMVA, ACQ has gained approval under relevant stated legislation, and AS 1604 – Specifications for Preservative Treatment.
Unlike other forms of treated timber, Waxwood has no arsenic or chrome. It incorporates only recycled copper and organic azole biocides as active constituents. This is more acceptable when doing work that involves children, animals and food crops. Or where extensive post treatment cutting and machining has to be done to the timber.
Waxwood is suitable for use in vegetable gardens, stakes, animal fencing, greenhouses and bee hives.
As the timber is treated with a water proofing paraffin wax, water ingress is reduced, thus any chemical loss is minimal.
Like all treated timber, Waxwood contains a salt. So, hot dipped galvanised or stainless steel fixings should be used.
Even though Waxwood has a paraffin wax added during the treatment, it can still be painted like any other timber. It is best left outside or insitu for about three weeks prior to painting for best results.
Waxwood decking can also be oiled or stained to desired colours. We find the best results come from using Feast Watson Natural decking oil.
Yes, all end cuts should be resealed with products like Ecoseal or CN Emulsion. Cut ends even when resealed should not have direct contact with the ground.
Waxwood can be disposed of through normal waste collection and disposal services.
